Mosquito and Vector Control
Contra Costa County maintains a special district for mosquito and vector control. The Contra Costa Mosquito and Vector Control District’s primary goal is to protect the public’s health by controlling local pests, including rats, skunks, ticks, yellowjackets, bees and mosquitoes and providing public awareness and prevention assistance to Contra Costa County residents.

West Nile virus is a viral disease of birds that is transmitted from bird to bird by mosquitoes. It can occasionally cause meningoencephalitis (inflammation of the brain and spinal cord) in susceptible people or animals that are bitten by infected mosquitoes. Most people and animals recover from the virus, but those with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop serious symptoms possibly resulting in death.
