[ARCHIVED] San Pablo Avenue Complete Streets Project - Weekly Updates (5/14/2018)

Work Completed This Week

The prime contractor, Ghilotti Brothers, Inc. (GBI), completed paving work along the westerly portion of San Pablo Avenue in the vicinity of Robert Miller Drive.  This was done to allow relocation of the southbound through traffic lane to the area previously occupied by the raised channelization island to facilitate the next phase of construction.  Temporary striping and reflective markers were placed to delineate temporary lane lines in this area.  Raised traffic barriers were also placed along the west side of the southbound left turn pocket at the San Pablo Avenue and Robert Miller Drive intersection to provide protection to vehicles while construction work in this area continues.

GBI also continued removing concrete in the median island along San Pablo Avenue north and south of Robert Miller Drive.

Initial discussions with subcontractor AVAR Construction, Inc. occurred to coordinate installation of soil nail retaining walls planned along the east side of San Pablo Avenue.   Work for these walls is expected to begin in the second or third week of June, but the exact start date is dependent on the availability and delivery of materials.

Also completed this week was the reprogramming of the traffic signal controller for the San Pablo Avenue and Robert Miller Drive intersection to add an additional signal phase to control the southbound through traffic movement.  Previously, this was an uncontrolled through movement.   The signal phasing change was implemented without any incident.   Traffic seems to have adjusted well to this minor change.

Work Expected Next Week

GBI will continue with removal of the median island in San Pablo Avenue north of Robert Miller Drive.  Construction of the pavement structural section will begin at the areas where the median has already been removed, which include in the immediate vicinity of Robert Miller Drive and between Rivers Street and Lancaster Drive.  Excavation and material removal will continue in other areas of the project throughout the week.
